Barbell Certification

I’ll be in sunny Santa Cruz this weekend with CrossFit Coach Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore, Ph.D. learning, studying, and practicing the deadlift, back squat, press, bench press, and power clean.
These lifts are indispensable to CrossFit training. I expect to bring some great knowledge back in cold Bathurst :)

Mark Rippetoe is the proprietor of the Wichita Falls Athletic Club/CrossFit Wichita Falls and writes on various aspects of strength training and barbell exercise. He has 28 years’ experience in the fitness industry and ten years as a competitive powerlifter. He has published articles in the Strength and Conditioning Journal, is a regular contributor to the CrossFit Journal, and is the author, with Lon Kilgore, of the books Practical Programming for Strength Training and the just-released second edition of Starting Strength, subtitled Basic Barbell Training.

Fitness in a 100 words:

■ Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. ■ Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. ■ Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. ■ Regularly learn and play new sports.
